John Miller: First Solo Museum Show 'I Stand, I Fall' Open Now At ICA Miami

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami yesterday opened the first solo American museum exhibition and mid-career survey of conceptual artist John Miller. I Stand, I Fall brings together approximately 75 works, including new large-scale sculptures, paintings, and never-before-seen works from the 1980s.

Also on view is Miller’s most ambitious architectural installation to date – a vast and immersive mirrored labyrinth on view in ICA Miami’s Atrium Gallery.

Organized by Deputy Director and Chief Curator Alex Gartenfeld, the ICA Miami presentation traces Miller’s use of the figure in order to examine themes of citizenship and politics, and the conventions of realism in contemporary art. Arranged chronologically, the exhibition includes Miller’s drawings and paintings from the 1982-83 – the majority of which have never been presented publically – as well as the artist’s iconic monochromatic gold and brown reliefs, and anthropomorphic sculptures of globes, mannequins, and office furniture.

Photographs from the ongoing series, The Middle of the Day (1994-present), reveal the source material for many of the artist’s paintings and collages. I Stand, I Fall is on view through June 12, 2016.
