Postures - Sophie Hirsch's Notes on Rigidity and Flexibility
We are all familiar with the ways in which we communicate non-verbally, particularly through bodily posture. The ways in which our bodies respond to internal phenomenons are rife - Sophie Hirsch's works use industrial material to examine the way these properties interact, yield, and respond to tension. In Postures, Hirsch explores rigidity and flexibility to compose a language in which codependent interactions determine form.
In a series of wall works, silicone casts attach to layers of mesh fabric, giving the tensile material a weight and distinct contours. In turn the mesh acts as connective tissue, stretching and fortifying the rippable silicone formation. In the center of the gallery, plaster blocks ground and stabilize the curves of polycarbonate sheets to create free-standing objects. Through these interactions, Hirsch investigates the corporeal materiality of her sculptures and reveals the underlying fragility in attaining balance through points of tension.
