Smiles on Faces: Behind the Scenes of a Graduate Collection
Regent's University London graduate Gemma Edwards takes After Nyne behind the scenes of her graduate collection, discussing her inspirations and the role Regent's has played in helping her realise her goals and ambitions
‘Seaside Calamity’ is an exciting collection filled with ruffles, stripes and other delights. Mixing country western styling with the Victorian seaside my graduate collection really brings forward fun and colour in to the fashion industry. I incorporated an explosion of colours and textures to really make the collection appeal to viewers. I wanted them to feel excited and I felt that came across from the reactions of the guests. The giant inflatable flamingo and other styling concepts definitely put a smile on faces.
The day of the show was a very memorable one; guests packed out the venue along with friends and family who have supported me throughout my entire degree. Sitting front row, I was able to see my collection come to life as the opening collection. The Cadillac Three, a country rock band from Nashville set the mood of the collection with their toned down rock single Tennessee Mojo blaring through the speakers.
Studying fashion design and marketing at Regent’s University has given me an amazing insight in to the industry I want to excel in. The tutors who became friends do their very best to push your boundaries and explore your full potential. I really felt this whilst completing my final collection and I am so proud of the final outcome.
From this point on I am determined to excel in a design career. The dream initially is to create my own womenswear brand under my own name. I can envision it now with more collections that make people smile, laugh and feel fantastic. I want my brand to not just make and sell garments, but to create entire stories behind the looks that will submerge followers in to my world.
