PRIVATE VIEW: Lucienne O'Mara at Brocket Gallery, Thursday June 30th
For their third exhibition in their 2016 Curated Painting Programme, XX, Brocket Gallery presents a captivating new body of work from dynamic young painter, Lucienne O’Mara.
Evolving from a fascination with identity, particularly the fluid and unfixed nature of it, O'Mara makes drawings from the figure, subtly referencing the subjects in old ‘men’s mags’, that she then simplifies and abstracts. The poured areas of paint that soak into the unprimed canvas, becoming a part of the surface, have come to represent the multifaceted elements of ones self – each seeking a harmony with one another, a kind of
balance.
The outlines on her canvas mark the prescribed space for that particular stain. The irregular shapes reflect the way in which ones own identity is constantly in a state of flux - it can't be solidly defined. O'Mara’s interests lie in people who are in some way performing, whether it is on stage, a character within themselves, or a role they feel they should be conforming to.
The process of applying paint and distorting the image until it is simply fragments of itself, represents the way ones identity appears in a complete form, but is made up of a history and the different parts of yourself that are in a constant battle to rise to the surface. The fragility and impermanence of watercolour on canvas, a surface that mainly rejects the paint and can easily be moved or erased, mirrors how one small act can permanently change your identity, and how mistakes and chance play such a key part in shaping it.
O’Mara’s exceptional work was much celebrated by visitors to her first Brocket London exhibition, Greater Depths: Redefining Watercolour in June 2015.
