Zsofia Schweger's Solo Show at Griffin Gallery Draws on Alienation & the Concept of Home

Fresh from being selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2016, and as a result of her six month Griffin Art Prize residency, Zsofia Schweger will be presenting new work at Griffin Gallery.

The 27 year old Hungarian artist's first solo show BLOC - which started Aug 18th and will run to Sept 30th - sees her attempting to reconcile her fond nostalgia for her homeland with her life as an emigrant in the UK.

Paintings of minimal domestic interiors in strikingly bold shapes mask an anxiety about the nature of belonging and evoke a sense of comfort and alienation.

After studying for a year in New York when she was 16, Schweger returned to Hungary to finish school

and was determined to move abroad to continue her education. She completed a double major at

Wellesley College, Massachusetts in BA Studio Art and Comparative Literature, where she was also

awarded the Madeleine Albright Fellowship. She went onto earn her MA Fine Art at the Slade

School of Fine Art.

Griffin Gallery is committed to supporting the global artistic community and is now firmly established

on the London emerging contemporary art scene. The gallery is not commercially driven but provides

a platform for a range of artists, both national and international, from recent graduates to mid-career

artists.

Their two studios are occupied by a wide range of artists from around the world, with differing

concerns and approaches to making. At the centre of their programme is a belief that an engagement

with materials is fundamental to the act of creating contemporary art. Griffin Gallery is under the

independent Directorship of Becca Pelly-Fry, who is also Head Curator for ColArt International.
