An Exploration of Passion: Lauren Baker’s Barely Controllable Emotion
London’s M&C Saatchi and multidisciplinary artist Lauren Baker present the solo show Barely Controllable Emotion, featuring a selection of exciting new works from Baker. Baker invites viewers to let their emotions run wild through her passionate world of creativity, including neon artwork and limited edition hand embellished prints. The show’s bold title, a definition of passion, seeks to provide insight into Baker’s deep rooted desires.
"We are thrilled to have Lauren Baker’s artwork on the walls. I’ve had her on my radar for a while and am a proud collector of her work already”, Sarah Williams, Head of Art Buying, M&C Saatchi stated.
An exhibition highlight being unveiled is a six way colour lenticular beating heart print entitled Truly Deeply Alive, with Baker aiming to express the intimacy and explosiveness of love and lust. As the viewer changes angle, an anatomical heart grows in size with each moving beat and the changing colours gives the illusion illumination. The bold pink neon Be kind to animals or I’ll kill you presents a provocative yet comic take on Baker’s attitude towards living beings.
After spending two months in Guatemala studying metaphysics and mediation a number of Baker’s works have spiritual undertones, including another piece in the show Secrets of the Universe which was inspired by inventor Nicola Tesla who once said: ‘If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibrations.’
Baker explores a variety of materials and textures to create energetic pieces, all stemming from her desire to amplify and bring to life the sensory definition of touch. Recent works involve neon, infinity mirror and moving sculpture in order to explore the fragility of life, energy, love and interconnectedness. Baker’s artwork stands as a reminder of the lack of verbal language within society, with the pieces evoking a lustful energy resulting in visually alluring exhibitions.
