Resistance and Persistence: Sean Scully tours China
After the success of Turner Prize nominated painter Sean Scully’s recent exhibitions in Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing, his latest exhibition Resistance and Persistence opens at the Guangdong Museum of Art before travelling to the Hubei Museum of Art.
Scully is a renowned artist having exhibited widely across Europe and the United States, represented by permanent collections in a number of galleries including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Scully’s work is characterised by panels created with thick layers of paint, with his motif of the stripe developing and refining over time.
The exhibition, showcasing more than 60 works, focuses on the Scully’s paintings and works on paper, along with providing a platform for his major sculpture China Piled Up. Scully has been described by art experts in China as probably the first Western artist to make an impact on Chinese art since a show by Rauschenberg in the mid-1980s. The exhibition aims to further develop abstract art in China and comes at an interesting moment for an artist such as Scully, as Chinese abstract art is generating increasing national and international attention.
The effect on Chinese art Scully’s work is reflected in his success in the art market, with the tour of exhibitions targeting artists, students and the growing number of collectors in the region. The tour of exhibitions is organised by Made in China in association with the Timothy Taylor Gallery in London and the British Council.
Resistance and Persistence opens at the Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou on 6 September and runs to 9 October 2016 before travelling to the Hubei Museum of Art, Wuhan from 10 January to 12 March 2017.
