Independent Curator Suzie Quill on Teaming up with Ant Pearce for The Other Art Fair

On visiting The Other Art Fair last October there was one artist’s work which stood out from the rest— the aesthetically beautiful yet intriguingly clever work of Ant Pearce. As an art director and curator at Saatchi & Saatchi advertising at the time I was on the lookout for artwork, which provided something beyond just exterior beauty and was instantly drawn to Ant’s work. I now operate independently and when Ant invited me to team up with him to curate his exhibition for the 14th Edition of The Other Art Fair I welcomed the opportunity.

In previous fairs Ant has exhibited a few pieces from his latest series of work. To change things up I have selected a range of Ant’s work from 2015—2016, one of which was exhibited at the at After Nyne’s curatorial debut ‘Pleasures of the Gaze’ at The Exhibitionist Hotel late last year, the other pieces have never been seen before. Works on display will feature Ant’s two main muses, Kate Moss and Brigitte Bardot, together with works of a more erotic nature, all combining Ant’s signature thread drawings with various media.

Pieces from 2015 examine the human condition, dissecting the psychical personality while encompassing aspects of narcissism, gender and the life and death drives, as discussed by Freud. These works embrace the idea of deconstruction and the spiritual importance of the line as explored by Dutch avant-garde, constructivist Theo van Doesburg. The check and block design and initial colour palette for this series was inspired by the iconic British luxury fashion house Burberry. Work from 2016 explores phenomena of character. This emotionally charged series touches on ideas of the will (the heart) and the intellect (the head) as discussed by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (1788—1860) in his central work ‘The World as Will and Representation’.

Ant has said, ‘I am excited to be back at TOAF, it’s refreshing to be working with Suzie, someone from a similar commercial background means we understand each other. She’s punchy, I like that. I am thrilled at Suzie’s curation for the fair, which combines two of my favourite series. This, together with her general guidance and support will no doubt bring a strong and fresh feel to the stall.’

TOAF commented, 'We are great supporters of Ant's work and look forward to welcoming him back to his 6th edition of the fair'

I can say I am delighted to be able to connect with Ant and his art, working together on this, our first project, enthuses me for our future collaborations. His combined art, design, architectural and philosophical influences will immediately catch your eye.

We will be at stall 153 at The Other Art Fair. Ant is also featured in Issue 11 of After Nyne.

THE OTHER ART FAIR will take place on 6-9th October
