Money Talks....Leontia Reilly Introduces Topical New Show on Wealth & Consumerism
Leontia Gallery will be taking over Shoreditch.... 94 Leonard St, London EC2A 4RH to be precise...for an exciting and topical new exhibition. 'Money Talks" explores concepts of wealth, idolatry, and consumerism through art.
In a two-part exclusive for After Nyne, curator, and owner of Leontia Gallery, Leontia Reilly introduces the show and gives us an insight into her curatorial process.
I started to think about putting this exhibition together after (for me anyway) the fatal news of Brexit. It’s a troubling yet exciting time for creation, in troubled times artists create powerful works and from the works collected there is one clear message – we need change.
The artists have brilliantly created works that address so much more than Brexit on many different levels exploring concepts of wealth, idolatry, and consumerism.
Dan Tague’s work is literally made out of currency, his politically charged with strong statements that are both profound and questioning. His hybrid dollar bill pieces were first conceived after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina – New Orleans is his hometown.
Rebecca Mason has made a powerful new neon work with “Money” neon emblazoned on text that affirms and questions society obsession and need for money.
Magnus Gjoen presents Gerard Andriesz Bicker a 16th century wealthy overweight noble merchant with a MacDonald’s emblazoned attire. Highlighting corporate greed.
Roberto Voorbij whose designer sick bags will be on display, his Chanel and Louis Vuitton sick bags highlight the plight of anorexia in the fashion industry.
Also showing will be Louis-Nicolas Darbon who will be showing pieces from his Chanel series, larger than life paintings of black and neon dripping Chanel bottles, his work crosses fashion boundaries and wryly ask is this what society really wants?
British artist and animal lover and activist Louise McNaught will also be showing a savage piece highlighting the horrors of Trophy Hunting.
For enthusiasts looking to buy their first piece, I'll be offering private viewings and consultations to talk through the artwork whilst sharing industry insight on investing in art.
Art lovers from collectors to novices will also be invited to attend the preview night on 18/11/16 To RSVP email rsvp @info@leontiagallery.com
After the private view visitors can see the collection until the 18th December at Leontia Gallery 6-10 Central Parade, 137 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, E17 4RT
